What’s up with April?

A few days ago I read the results from a survey I asked my readers to fill on my Polish language version and a lot of people told me that they’d love to read about how things with April are. Since I was thinking about writing a post like this for a while now I thought this is a great time to do so. It’ll be long and it’s still not all! Sorry for the quality of photos but she’s just so active that the only time I can take a picture is when she’s asleep.

..

Time flies like crazy and April is already almost 9 months old which is amazing. I remember giving birth as if it was yesterday and on my posts list there’s still one about a hospital bag! She’ll be a year very soon.

Right now she’s around 76 cm (29 in) and weighs around 10 kg (22 lbs). She has four teeth and three more are coming now, I can already see half of them. She’s getting more and more hair, it’s getting longer and goes on her ears but it’s still too short for cute little ponytails.
.
.
As you already know and as some of you didn’t like April started sitting up pretty fast (she was around 3 months old), she started rolling over fast too and crawling. Right now one of her favorite activities is standing up and she can hold herself on her feet for a long time without waggling, she’s very stable. She sometimes falls on her butt but most of the time she squats and then either gets back up or sit on the floor. She can twist her body and look in different direction standing at the same time so she can keep her balance in a perfect way. When she stands holding something she moves her feet, watches us walking and tries to repeat. She made her first steps using her walker but I think she’ll start walking by herself pretty soon. She went all the way up the stairs around three weeks ago and then every time I’d grab her and put her aside she’d go back on the stairs. We bought gates and now I feel better.

She still drinks hemp milk but less than before because she eats more of normal food. Her diet didn’t change much. When I eat something, strawberries or bananas, I give her some too and she eats it herself. I give her some blended food too. When we started introducing new foods she’d get one type of fruit at a time so that her digestive system would get used to everything. Now she gets mixed stuff too, we try to stay in one fruit group at a time but we don’t make it always. It’ll be easier to do when she can chew some more by herself. Her favorite flavors are strawberries with pears and bananas, and prunes with spinach and banana. She likes everything she had so far, she even liked kale with spinach and avocado. Most of the food she gets is fresh since she eats what we eat (ok, besides apples which she likes and I don’t) but she also gets pouches bought in a store. She eats organic only with no extra stuff (no sugar, etc.) which is very important to us. We don’t feed her with spoons because we want her to decide how much she’ll eat, when she’ll eat and to feel food in her hands, see what she can do with them and so on.

I still carry her in a wrap or a carrier but I need to tell you that it’s getting more and more difficult now that she’s getting heavier. Shorter distances are fine but the longer I walk the harder it is.

.
April doesn’t really like books. I try to read for her from time to time but she’s not interested. Of course I don’t give up and keep trying but I won’t force her to sit on my lap and listen when she doesn’t feel like it. The time will come. She loves listening to music though and I think her taste is shaping because she reacts differently to different music. For example she always listens and stops crying when I turn on The Baseballs but when there’s something louder and more aggressive she’ll squint her eyes and waves her hands which stops when there’s a different song playing. I don’t give her any cartoons to watch or anything, the only thing she watches is one youtube vlog a day together with me. She always smiles when she hears them saying hi.
.
.
People I meet in grocery stores or other public places are usually surprised by how calm April is. And she is like that which is awesome. She’s a very happy baby, she laughs a lot, smiles all the time, she likes people. I don’t really have problems with her but if she needs something she’ll obviously show it. I won’t be too modest now and I’ll tell you that I think a big part of it is how we all treat each other because if we were fighting all the time and so on April would feel it and she’d act differently which I talked about in one of my previous posts.
.
.
Right now her favorite toy is a colorful stacker which I put it in the order and she messes it up. At the beginning she would just put all that on the floor and gets mad that she couldn’t take the biggest one but now she knows to turn it upside down or she just grabs one by one. She likes playing with whatever but there are some toys she doesn’t like a lot. It’s obvious, we all have different tastes.

The only thing that bothers me is that she loves eating paper and tissues, she just loves it! I think that I cleaned everything and a few minutes later I hear her eating paper again. She sometimes goes to the bathroom and plays with the toilet water.

April really likes being in the water, doesn’t matter if it’s a bathtub or a shower. She feels comfortable and never cries or gets mad… unless I put her on her back, she doesn’t like being on the back while in the water. I try to get her used to it though and I know it’ll work eventually.
.
.
We still don’t use any oils or body lotions. The only thing we use is a shampoo and a body wash 2 in 1, she sometimes baths in water only. Her skin is still very smooth, moisturized, she doesn’t have any rash or anything, never had. We give her a bath once a week or so unless she gets very dirty. I sometimes takes her under the shower so that she can relax a little if she’s not in a mood. She got her first bath when she was around three weeks old and she wasn’t cleaned after birth at all which I talked about in a post about my birth plan. Today when I put her to the bathtub she played for a while, then she started getting up and sitting down and once her foot slide and she fell in the water going totally under it. I saw her scared face, her eyes were opened the whole time and Nate took her from under very fast. Then she took a few deep breaths and… went back to playing. The best thing is that when she was under the water she kept her breath which surprised me because we never practiced that before so it’s awesome.
.
.
She’s very, very vocal. She talks a lot in her language, makes tons of sounds all the time and recently she learned how to… scream. Seriously, I sometimes hear something like “aaaaa!” and when I ask “what?” she just smiles.
.
.
April loves cuddling and she often climbs on me and hugs my neck putting her head on my cheek. It’s so cute! She really likes being by someone, being held and laying on my chest. She can play by herself for longer periods of time too but mainly when I’m somewhere further away or when she can’t see me. She had this time when she would panic after losing me from her sight when I left to the bathroom or something, she would start crying.

There are days when she’s fussy, when she feels worse. Then she’d love to be carried all the time, she’d like to be by me all the time and if I put her down she cries. And I don’t want and can’t do that. Not only that my arms hurt after a while but there are things I don’t want to do as well. But you know, it’s just how babies are sometimes, it happens.
..

She takes two naps during the day and we put her to bed for the night around 9 pm. She wakes up around 8.30-9 in the morning and goes for her first nap around 1,5-2 hours after she gets up, she then sleeps around 2 hours. Her second nap depends on how the day goes but she usually goes down around 4.30-5 pm and she sleeps until 6.30 the latest. I mean, I wake her up then if she doesn’t wake up by herself because if she slept longer she wouldn’t sleep at night. If she falls asleep after 6.30 I let her sleep for around 10 minutes only. It’s enough for her to get her energy to play back and then go to bed around 9. She wakes up like 3 times at night to drink some milk. It sometimes happens that she sleeps 7 hours straight too but not too many.
.
.
It’s usually easy to put her to bed for the night because when she’s tired she just falls asleep right then when I put her down. But here are moments when she just doesn’t want to sleep by herself and that’s it. She’ll cry, scream and get up but when I pick her up she stops. It happens, but rarely, that I let her nap on my chest and then I can rest too but I don’t do it too often because when she needs a longer nap then she needs a longer one. At night, however, I want her to be able to fall asleep in her own bed which, like I said, isn’t really a problem. Me or Nathan stays by her crib until she falls asleep usually and she falls asleep with a bottle of milk. We don’t leave her if she cries and if she doesn’t cry it happens that we leave her in her room and she then falls asleep by herself. It’s cute that sometimes when she’s tired and she sees a pillow on the floor she puts her head on it.

I don’t close her in a bubble and don’t protect her from everything. If she, for example, goes under a chair and she starts crying and gets upset because she doesn’t know how to get out I don’t take her out right then, I sit down by her, talk to her and let her find her own solution. And it happens in different situations too. It usually works but when a problems is too big I pick her up. I also have my own limits if it comes to her crying and there are moments when I take her immediately because she hits herself or just cries too much. And when I say “too much” I mean that I see that she really needs help and I don’t want to leave her.

I think that’s all for now! Seems like I wrote everything possible but nope , there are things I’m going to keep for us too :). If you have any questions, feel free to leave comments!

Talk to you next time,
